About Hay Day

Hay Day is Supercell's farming game: crops on timers, animals to feed, a roadside shop where neighbours buy what you produce, and a slow expansion into pastures and fishing grounds. It has passed 100 million installs on Android alone and still updates monthly. Two things shape daily play — a network connection is required at all times, and Diamonds, the premium currency, start at $1.99 and run to $39.99.

Hay Day Review: The Roadside Shop Does the Work

The Roadside Shop Runs the Economy

Selling is the loop that separates this from every idle farm game. Goods go into a roadside stall at a price you set, other players browse and buy, and coins come back without any timer being skipped. Neighbourhoods extend that into groups: members help fill each other's orders, chat about trades and run events together. Expansion follows the money — new pastures, a fishing lake, decorations to arrange once the useful land is claimed. Because the whole economy is player-to-player, it needs a live connection, which the developer states plainly in the listing.

Diamonds From $1.99, Farm Pass at $4.99

Currency is sold in a familiar ladder: a Pile of Diamonds at $1.99, a Bag at $4.99, a Sack at $9.99, a Box at $19.99 and a Chest at $39.99, with rotating special offers at $1.99, $4.99 and $9.99. The Farm Pass is a seasonal track at $4.99, or $11.99 bundled. Apple's listing also flags loot boxes, meaning some purchases return randomised contents rather than a named item. None of it is required — the game can be played entirely without spending — but the timers are tuned to make Diamonds attractive. US prices, and they change by region.

Two Stores, Two Different Verdicts

The ratings disagree in a way worth knowing before installing: 4.7 on the App Store against 4.4 from more than 13 million Google Play reviews, where the listing also carries a Contains ads badge — advertising appears in a game that already sells a season pass. Google Play records seven collected data categories, with app activity and device identifiers shared with third parties. The counterweight is maintenance: the Android listing was last updated in August 2026, and content still arrives on a monthly rhythm, which few free games of this age can claim.

Pros

  • The roadside shop turns produce into a player-driven market
  • Neighbourhoods add cooperative orders and events
  • Still updated monthly after more than a decade
  • Playable to the end without spending anything
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 648,000 ratings

Cons

  • A network connection is required at all times
  • Diamonds run from $1.99 to $39.99
  • Apple's listing flags loot boxes among the purchases
  • The Play listing carries a Contains ads badge as well

Verdict

The best-made farming game on a phone, and the roadside shop is the reason: producing goods for other players beats staring at a timer, and neighbourhoods give the routine a social spine. Two caveats decide it for you — it needs a connection every single session, and a free game that already sells a $4.99 season pass also carries advertising and loot boxes. Play it patiently and it costs nothing.

Gameplay8.5Crops, animals and the shop interlock; the market gives farming a purpose beyond timers.
Controls8.5Drag-and-tap farming that has been refined for a decade; nothing needs a tutorial twice.
Replay value8.5Neighbourhoods, seasonal passes and monthly updates keep long-term farms progressing.
Graphics & sound8.5Bright, readable art with animals that animate; it has aged better than its rivals.
Monetisation6.0Diamonds to $39.99, a season pass, loot boxes flagged by Apple, and ads on top.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Hay Day offline?

No. The developer states in the listing that a network connection is required, and the reason is structural: the roadside shop, neighbourhood orders and visits to other farms are all live player-to-player features. Without a connection the game will not open, so it is a poor choice for flights or underground commutes.

2

Is Hay Day free?

Yes, and it is completable without paying — Diamonds only speed up timers and unlock decorative extras. Purchases run from $1.99 for a small pile of Diamonds to $39.99 for a chest, with a Farm Pass at $4.99 or $11.99 bundled. Advertising also appears, which the Play listing confirms with a Contains ads badge.

3

What phone do you need?

It runs on modest hardware and supports several generations of older iPhones, which is how it reached more than 100 million Android installs. The download is moderate rather than large by modern standards. Because every session is online, a stable connection matters more than the processor in the phone.

4

Can you farm with friends?

Yes, through neighbourhoods: up to a group of players who help fill each other's orders, trade goods and take part in shared events, with a chat inside the group. Individual trades also happen through the roadside shop, where anyone can buy what you have listed at your price.

5

How much time does it need daily?

Crop timers run from a couple of minutes to several hours, so most players check in two or three times a day for a few minutes. Seasonal passes reward daily play for the length of a season. Skipping days costs nothing permanent — the farm waits — which is why it suits people who dislike streak pressure.
