About Plants vs Zombies 2

The sequel moves lawn defence onto a timeline — ancient Egypt, a pirate sea, the Wild West — with more than 180 plants to collect and level up. Unlike the original it is free, and the difference is visible: advertising, gem packs to $19.99, and individual plants sold for $3.99 and $4.99. Google Play rates it 4.1; the App Store, 4.7.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 Review: Free Sequel, Paid Plants

The Lawn Still Works

Five lanes, sun to collect, plants placed against advancing waves — the core is as well tuned as it was in 2013. Costs, cooldowns and zombie types turn each level into a small optimisation problem where the answer is a plant order rather than reflexes. The worlds change the rules rather than the scenery: tomb tiles in Egypt, ship planks and cannon fire at sea, minecarts that slide plants between lanes in the Wild West. Levels that look impossible usually have one specific solution, which is the mark of careful design rather than of difficulty inflation.

Levelling Turned It Into a Collection Game

Plants now have levels, raised by collecting duplicates, and the seed slots that decide how many plants you can bring into a level are themselves a purchase — $0.99 for a bonus slot. Individual plants are sold outright, with the App Store listing one at $3.99 and another at $4.99. That is the structural change from the original: a level you cannot pass has a purchasable answer as well as a strategic one, where the first game simply charged once and left you to think. More than 180 plants exist to be collected and upgraded.

4.1 on Play, 4.7 on Apple

Google Play carries a Contains ads badge and shows 4.1 stars from 7.43 million reviews — the weakest average of any game in this catalogue apart from the two rated below 3.5. Apple shows 4.7 from 433,000 ratings and rates it 13+, listing loot boxes, advertising and frequent contests among the contents. Coin packs run $2.99 to $9.99, gems $1.99 to $19.99, and the install is 196.5 MB. The gap between platforms tracks a decade of Android reviews written by people who paid for the original.

Verdict

The strategy underneath is still first-rate — worlds that change the rules, levels with genuine solutions, and art that has aged well. What sits on top is the free-to-play scaffolding the original avoided: advertising, upgrade levels, and plants sold for $4.99 apiece. Entirely playable without spending, if you are willing to retry a hard level rather than buy the plant that solves it.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

Mostly. Levels run on the device, so a flight or a tunnel does not stop play, and the adverts cannot load without a connection. Events, leaderboards and purchases all need the internet, and progress syncs to the account when it returns.

2

What does it sell?

Coins from $2.99 to $9.99, gems from $1.99 to $19.99, a bonus seed slot at $0.99, and specific plants at $3.99 and $4.99. Apple also lists loot boxes among the contents, so some plant upgrades arrive by chance rather than by choice.

3

What does it need to run?

196.5 MB and iOS 13 or later on iPhone — the lightest big-name game in this catalogue. It is built for older Android phones too, which is why a game from 2013 still shows a hundred million installs.

4

Is there any multiplayer?

No live multiplayer. Events and arena-style challenges compare scores against other players asynchronously, so you compete against numbers rather than people. The campaign is entirely single-player, which is how the series has always worked.

5

How long is a level?

Two to five minutes, and levels can be replayed for better scores. The pacing suits short sessions, though the later worlds introduce levels that need several attempts and a rethought plant selection, which turns a five-minute stop into half an hour.
