About FarmVille 2: Country Escape

FarmVille 2: Country Escape is Zynga's farming game built for phones rather than for a browser tab: crops grow on timers, animals produce goods, a boat and a co-op move produce between players. Its one structural advantage over every rival farm game is that Zynga advertises offline play, so the farm keeps working on a plane. Money runs on Keys, sold from $1.99, and on passes up to $19.99.

FarmVille 2 Review: The Farm Game That Works on a Plane

Offline Play Is the Real Difference

Almost every farm game on a phone stops at the login screen without a connection. This one advertises the opposite: crops, animals and orders continue while the device is offline, and the game syncs when it reconnects. That single decision changes where it fits — commutes underground, flights, patchy rural signal — and it is the reason people stay with a title whose art is over a decade old. The trade-off is that the social layer, the co-op and the trading boat all need a connection, so an offline session is a solo one.

Keys, Passes and a $19.99 Ceiling

Keys are the premium currency, sold as a Pile at $1.99, 140 for $4.99, 285 for $9.99 and 600 for $19.99. Above them sit timed tracks: an Event Pass at $6.99, a Farm Pass at $9.99 and a Premium Farm Pass at $19.99, plus subscription packs at $1.99 and $19.99. The pattern is familiar — Keys skip waiting, passes reward daily attendance — and the Play listing also carries a Contains ads badge, so free play includes advertising as well. Prices are US listings and shift with in-game events.

A Co-Op, a Boat, and Eight Shared Data Types

The multiplayer sits in Farm Co-Ops, where members fill orders together and trade goods, with a boat carrying larger requests between farms. That layer is what keeps a farm growing past the early levels. It is also where the data goes: Google Play records personal information, financial information and contacts as collected, and lists location, personal information and seven other categories as shared with third parties — a longer sharing list than any other farm game in this catalogue. Zynga belongs to Take-Two, whose privacy policy governs the account.

Pros

  • Plays offline, unlike almost every rival farming game
  • Farm Co-Ops let members fill orders and trade together
  • Rated 4.6 across more than three million Play reviews
  • A decade of content means the progression never runs out
  • Free to play without any purchase being required

Cons

  • Keys and passes run from $1.99 to $19.99
  • The Play listing carries a Contains ads badge
  • Location and seven other data types shared with third parties
  • Art and interface show their age against newer farm games

Verdict

Choose it over the newer farm games for one reason: it works without a signal, which no rival here offers. Everything else is competent and dated — familiar timers, warm art from another decade, a co-op that still fills orders. Skip it if data collection matters to you, because its sharing list is the longest in this category, or if you want a farm game that looks like it was made this decade.

Gameplay7.5Crops, animals and orders on timers; competent, familiar, and rarely surprising after the first week.
Controls8.0Tap-to-harvest and drag-to-place work cleanly on a small screen without misfires.
Replay value8.0Years of accumulated content and co-op orders keep the progression going well past level fifty.
Graphics & sound7.5Warm hand-drawn art that has aged; readable, but visibly older than newer farm titles.
Monetisation6.0Keys, three separate passes and advertising in the same free game.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play FarmVille 2 offline?

Yes, and it is the game's main selling point. Zynga advertises play without an internet connection, so planting, harvesting and animal care carry on and sync when the phone reconnects. The parts that need a connection are the social ones: co-op orders, trading through the boat and anything involving another player's farm.

2

Is FarmVille 2 free to play?

It is free to install and play, with advertising included — Google Play flags the listing with a Contains ads badge. Spending is optional and runs through Keys, from $1.99 for a small pile up to $19.99 for 600, and through passes: $6.99 for an event track, $9.99 for the Farm Pass and $19.99 for the premium version.

3

What phone does it need?

It supports older hardware on both platforms, which is part of why it has passed 50 million Android installs. The download is large for a farm game, so storage matters more than processing power. Because it runs offline, it also puts less strain on a weak or metered mobile connection than its rivals.

4

Can you play with friends?

Yes, through Farm Co-Ops: members join a shared group, fill orders together and trade goods, with a boat handling the larger requests. There is also a link to a Facebook farm for sending water between players. All of this needs a connection, so co-op play and offline play are separate modes in practice.

5

How much time does it take each day?

Crops and animals run on timers from a few minutes to several hours, so the natural rhythm is two or three short visits a day. Passes push that harder by rewarding daily attendance for a season. Ignoring them costs progress on the track but nothing on the farm itself, which keeps growing at your pace.
