Last War Review: The Advert Game Is the Tutorial

The Lane Runner Is Genuinely In There

Anyone who has seen the adverts knows the sequence: a squad runs down a corridor, gates multiply or subtract soldiers, turrets are picked up along the way, and a bloated boss with a health bar of 321 or 779 waits at the end. That mode exists and it plays exactly as advertised, which sets it apart from a decade of games that showed a mechanic they did not have. What the adverts leave out is that it is a short mini-game between the parts that actually take time.

Underneath It Is Another Base Builder

The main game is the familiar one: build a headquarters on an island, upgrade barracks and factories, wait out timers, join an alliance, march troops across a shared map and defend against other players. Resource counters run into millions, heroes are collected and levelled, and the lane runs become one of several activities feeding the same economy. It is competently made and completely conventional — the honest description is that a good advert was bolted onto a standard strategy game rather than the other way round.

A $24.99 Monthly Pass, and Packs to $99.99

The App Store lists hot packages from $0.99 through $9.99, $19.99 and $49.99 to $99.99, plus a monthly pass at $24.99 — the most expensive recurring subscription among the strategy games in this catalogue. Apple rates the game 13+ citing realistic violence, loot boxes, chat and user-generated content, on a 989.8 MB install. Google Play carries no advertising badge and shows 4.6 stars from 2.04 million reviews on 100 million installs; the App Store shows 4.7 from 449,000 ratings. Both averages are high for the genre, which says more about how well the lane mode converts new players than about the strategy game underneath.

Pros

  • The advertised lane mode is actually in the game
  • Lane runs are short and genuinely satisfying
  • No advertising badge on the Play listing
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 449,000 ratings
  • Alliance warfare on a persistent shared map

Cons

  • The monthly pass costs $24.99 to renew
  • Packs climb to $99.99 a purchase
  • The main game is a conventional timer-based builder
  • Apple lists loot boxes among the contents

Verdict

Worth noting for one reason: the mini-game its adverts sell is actually in the product, which after years of misleading campaigns is a low bar cleared. Play it for the lane runs. What surrounds them is a standard timer-driven builder with a $24.99 monthly pass and packs to $99.99 — familiar territory, and the reason to stop before the alliance obligations start.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. The base, the world map and the alliance systems are all server-side, and even the lane mode reports its results back. A connection is required for everything except looking at a cached screen.

2

What does it sell?

Packages from $0.99 to $99.99 and a monthly pass at $24.99. Purchases buy resources, speed-ups and hero material. Apple lists loot boxes, which is how the better heroes are distributed — the pass is the recurring cost to watch.

3

How much space does it need?

989.8 MB and iOS 13 or later, growing with each season. It runs on mid-range Android hardware, which is where most of its hundred million installs sit, though the lane mode is the part that stutters first on older phones.

4

Do you need an alliance?

For the strategy layer, yes — alliances speed up construction, hold territory and run the events with the best rewards. The lane mode is single-player, so the first hours can be played entirely alone before the map matters.

5

How long is a session?

The lane runs take a couple of minutes each; the base wants several short visits a day to restart timers, and alliance events ask for longer stretches at fixed hours. The commitment grows steadily rather than being obvious at the start.
