My Talking Tom Friends Review: Rated 4+, $9.99 a Month

A House of Chores With Animations Attached

The house divides into rooms and each room into tasks: a bathroom where a character is washed in a tub, a bedroom with bunk beds for putting them to sleep, a kitchen for feeding, a playroom with an easel and board games. Every action produces a short animation and a reward in coins, and the characters react when a need goes unmet. It is care-taking on timers, pitched exactly at the age that finds repetition reassuring rather than dull, and it works on that level.

Removing the Adverts Is Itself a Purchase

Google Play carries a Contains ads badge, and Apple rates the app 4+ while noting it contains advertising. The App Store then lists a $7.99 purchase whose entire function is to take those adverts away — the clearest statement of a business model anywhere in this catalogue: a game for pre-school children in which an advert-free experience is a paid upgrade. Adverts in this genre are typically video spots for other games, shown between activities, which is where a child taps without reading. Google Play's badge and Apple's note are the only warning a parent gets before installing.

Two Subscriptions at $9.99 Each

The App Store lists a friends subscription at $9.99 a month and a VIP subscription at the same price, plus a $14.99 premium bundle, a $4.99 pass, coin packs from $2.99 to $19.99 and starter bundles at $1.99. For an audience rated 4+ the price is less important than the tapping: the buttons sit inside a game whose players cannot read the amounts. Scale is enormous — 500 million installs, 4.3 stars from 4.12 million Play reviews, 4.4 from 307,000 on Apple, and a 401 MB install.

Pros

  • Simple care tasks a small child can follow alone
  • Six characters with reactions and short animations
  • Rooms and dressing options unlock through ordinary play
  • Rated 4.4 on the App Store across 307,000 ratings
  • Runs on inexpensive phones and older tablets

Cons

  • Advertising inside an app rated 4+
  • Removing the advertising costs a further $7.99
  • Two separate subscriptions at $9.99 a month
  • Coin packs reach $19.99 in a children's game

Verdict

As a toy for a small child it works: clear tasks, warm animation and nothing to read. As a purchase it is the most aggressively monetised children's product in this catalogue — advertising in a 4+ app, $7.99 to remove it, and two subscriptions at $9.99 a month. Install it with purchases locked at the device level and, ideally, with the wifi off.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does it work without internet?

Largely yes — the house, the chores and most minigames run on the device, and the adverts cannot load without a connection. Playing in aeroplane mode is the cheapest way to hand this to a child, since it removes both the advertising and any accidental purchase.

2

What does it sell?

Two monthly subscriptions at $9.99 each, a $14.99 bundle, a $4.99 pass, coin packs from $1.99 to $19.99, and a $7.99 purchase that removes advertising. None of it is required to play, but all of it sits inside an app rated for four-year-olds.

3

What does it need to run?

401 MB and iOS 13 or later, which covers most phones and tablets still in family use. It is designed for cheap Android hardware as well, since its half-billion installs come largely from devices handed down to children rather than bought for them.

4

Can two children play together?

Not simultaneously. There is one house and one save, so sharing means taking turns on the same device. The six characters give the impression of company, but the game has no multiplayer, no accounts and no way to visit anyone else's house.

5

How long does a session last?

As long as you allow. Needs refill on timers and notifications invite a return, so the natural session is short but frequent — the design deliberately has no ending. Device-level screen time limits are more effective here than anything inside the app.
